ENG

Lazaret is a visual and sound installation that consists of three videos recorded in the chapel of Llatzeret (Menorca), on the road between the Port d’Alcúdia and the Port of Soller (Mallorca) and the Rocks of Egypt (Menorca).

This video performance features an empowered mercurial figure who, located inside the chapel, plays a song entitled Will You Ever Be An Artist ? This song reflects and illuminates some issues related to the problems that dissent and non-normative individuals have to deal with during their lives. At the same time, it unearths the memory of this space, which until the 19th century was used to keep the people who suffered from tuberculosis and leprosy in quarantine.

The sequence shot in the Rocks of Egypt shows an individual turned into a kind of martyr, a hybrid between San Sebastian and Sisyphus, a being that is made from the same material that the landscape that surrounds her, who have to confront this land all the time in order to inhabit it.

The work deconstructs in itself, what it means to be an LGTBIQ + artist, today (in the 21st century), as well as enriches and defines the culture and history of the community in the context of the island of Menorca.

ESP
